Spring is finally here! Whether you're comfortable dining in or still taking out, more good eats are to be found in this edition of the Philly Grub newsletter. Open up and say ahhhh...
We just got our first taste of actual Spring and a flirtation with summer weather as temperatures hit the low 80s this past week. Even with indoor dining capacities increased to 50%, it sure feels nice to know that we can dine outdoors comfortably if we want to. Speaking of warmer weather treats…
John’s Water Ice Goes Mobile!
If you can’t get to John’s Water Ice at 7th and Christian in South Philly, let John’s Water Ice come to you. A new mobile operation of the popular “wooder ice” shop will be hitting the streets and event circuit starting in April. What’s your favorite water ice flavor?
Silk City Diner Reopens on March 31
Silk City, the popular eclectic retro diner and lounge located at 5th & Spring Garden, announced its full-service relaunch on Wednesday, March 31. Indoor dining will be socially distanced per current restrictions. Starr Restaurants Launches Fourth Virtual Restaurant Concept
As I have reported before, Starr Restaurants has dove into the ghost kitchen game with a few concepts working out of various Starr restaurants. They’ve been very successful for the restaurateur, so it’s no surprise he’s launched another one. The latest concept is WING WING WING, which is all about chicken wings in a variety of flavors and dipping sauces along with three kinds of fries. Pickup is available from Frankford Hall at 1210 Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, and delivery is available via Doordash, Caviar, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. Hours are Monday-Thursday 4-10 PM, Friday-Saturday 4-11 PM, and Sunday 4-9 PM. Are you excited about another wing joint?
Barry’s Buns to Open in Wildwood Crest in May
As we begin to think about our time down the shore this summer, Barry’s Buns, the popular Chestnut Hill-based bakery, announced it would open a location in Wildwood Crest on May 7. The newest outpost, a 900-square-foot space located at 6107 New Jersey Avenue a few blocks from the beach, will open in time for Mother’s Day Weekend. It will include all of the delicious bites found at the original location, along with some new menu items such as coffee, Nitro Coffee, and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches. Are you already a fan of Barry’s Buns?
Tiffin Indian Cuisine Adds New Eco-Friendly Takeout Containers
Tiffin Indian Cuisine is setting out to save the planet one curry at a time. The local Indian restaurant chain announced it would offer new, environmentally safe containers for take-out orders, the first of its kind in the greater Philadelphia area restaurant scene. Guests may return them to the restaurant within six weeks to avoid a $3.50 per container fee or keep them for the $3.50 fee. The containers are made from highly durable polypropylene, BPA-free, microwavable, dishwasher safe, and certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). Do you prefer eco-friendly containers for takeout?
Caribbean Restaurant Week is Coming
The Young Caribbean Professional Network announced Caribbean Restaurant Week would be April 17-24 this year. Several restaurants will be participating, serving up tropical-inspired fare for dine-in, pick-up, or takeout. Part of the proceeds goes towards YCPN programs. If you can’t get away to the islands, maybe this is the next best thing. Are you a fan of Caribbean cuisine?
