I hope you’re all having a nice weekend. Can you believe we’re just a couple of weeks away from the unofficial start to summer?
The Franklin Bar Has Closed
I reported on May 3rd that The Franklin Bar (aka The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company) had closed because I had seen employees talking about it on social media. I also spoke with someone I considered a fairly reliable source. A few journalists reached out to me asking me how I confirmed it. As if I’d give up a source to another journalist. Either way, the confirmation eventually came the other day. While it is sad news for that location, they are seeking a new one. Shoutout to HughE Dillon of Philly Chit Chat for recognizing that I broke the news. I don’t normally break news, but I was legitimately sad and wanted to share my fond and fuzzy memories from this venerable drinking establishment.
Do you have fun memories of The Franklin Bar? Let me know!
Bluecoat Gin Unveils New Logo and New Bottle
Iconic local spirits brand Bluecoat Gin has a new look. Last week, Philadelphia Distilling announced a new logo and new bottle for its Fishtown-made gin which started in 2006. While I liked the old look, I’m digging the new one. What do you think of the new look? Are you a fan of Bluecoat Gin?
Barry’s Buns Opens New Wildwood Location
Sweets lovers down the shore will be happy to hear that Barry’s Buns opened a new store in Wildwood Crest last week. After their Bourse location closed last year due to the pandemic, they began putting more focus into their original Chestnut Hill location. But the dream of owning a bakery down the shore never died, so Joel and Jen Singer found a great spot and went for it. Sun’s out, buns out for Wildwood. Are you going to Wildwood this season?

$25 Lobster Clam Bakes at Red Owl Tavern
Not heading down the shore any time soon? You might be interested in Red Owl Tavern’s $25 Lobster Clam Bakes every Monday night now through Labor Day. The seafood dish is served in a traditional New England-style speckled pot with a copious array of seafood including ½ lb lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp, corn on the cob, and fingerling potatoes. The Lobster Clam Bakes will remain on Red Owl Tavern’s menu throughout the week ($41) but Mondays are the day to feast on the classic summer feast when the pots are just $25 each. Sounds good to me. Stop by and let me know what you think!
